Southern Literary Festival

The annual Southern Literary Festival will be hosted by Mississippi University for Women this weekend (April 22-24). W English professor and director of the creative writing program, Dr. Kendall Dunkelberg, is serving as president of the SLF Association this year and has been instrumental in organizing and planning this year's event. The Festival celebrates the work of Southern creative writing students and awards annual prizes in the categories of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, essay, and literary magazine. Attendees come from twenty schools across the Southeast, including more than half a dozen from Mississippi alone.

The Festival will open on Thursday evening at 7:30PM with a reading by poet Jeanie Thompson in Carrier Chapel. Another reading will take place Friday evening at 7:30 (also in Carrier Chapel), featuring nonfiction author Alan Huffman and novelist Dedra Johnson.

Student workshops will be conducted during the day on Friday and Saturday, led by writers/professors Richard Lyons, Catherine Pierce, Becky Hagenston, Michael Kardos, Dottie Blais, and W professors Michael Smith and Dunkelberg.

All of the readings are free and open to the public, so make plans to attend!
