Meet the Candidates: Malinda Mabry Scott

Malinda Mabry Scott, who was a fashion merchandising major at MUW from 1974-1978, has agreed to serve on the MFAeA Board of Directors.  After leaving MUW, where she was a member of the Meh Ladies, Chapel Choir, Silhouettes and Black List, she received her BBA in Marketing from Austin Peay State University.  

Malinda is the owner of Malinda Mabry-Scott Transcription service, about which we learned here.

Malinda is married to Floyd Scott, Ph.D.,  Professor at Austin Peay State University, Center of Excellence in Field Biology.  Her son Fount Mabry Darnell and his wife Lydia are involved in the horse industry. Her daughter Emily Louise Darnell of  Culowhee NC, is finishing  a Masters of Arts in Composition and Rhetoric in May, 2011 and hopes to pursue her doctorate at UNC Greensboro.  Her pets are Marley (brown poodle), Max (apricot poodle and terrorizer) and Kosmo Kramer Kat, a 13 year old organe tabby and boss of all.

As a Board Member, it is her goal to promote the W as the wonderful educational institution that it has been in the past and will continue to be in the future.  As she told us "The Long Blue Line is an amazing thing! No matter where I go, and I mean, anywhere, I always meet someone who attended the W or whose mother, aunt, sister, cousin or daughter attended the W. There is an instant bond between W girls and guys! I see this as a wonderful legacy that MUW has given all of those who have attended."

MUW Alumna and Business Woman: Malinda Mabry-Scott

Malinda Mabry-Scott, a Fashion Merchandising major who attended MUW from 1974 through 1978, is the owner of Malinda Mabry-Scott Transcription Services. While at the W, Malinda was a Member of Meh Ladies, Chapel Choir, Silhouettes, and Black List.

The specialty of Malinda Mabry-Scott Transcription Services is  transcription for graduate school students and professors for interviews, and focus groups that they use for their research.  In the course of this work Malinda has learned more than she ever thought she’d know about  rural health, Overeaters Anonymous, keeping African American families healthy and intact, and incarceration of women and their loved ones.

Like many business owners, Malinda evolved into a business owner, rather than decided to be one.   “After my divorce I took some accounting and Quick Book Classes at Nashville Tech.  I was doing bookkeeping at the time for an accountant, free-lancing, so I could stay at home with my daughter.  I thought driving to Nashville twice a week to class would get me out of Clarksville!  A lady in my class noticed that I typed extremely fast.  She had a friend who was a grad student at Vanderbilt who needed transcription done.  I worked for her until she finished her degree then a few others but heard nothing for a few years.  One day about 5 years ago, I got an email from UGA requesting my services.  The student I had worked for at Vandy was now at UGA and Clemson.”

Her business has grown though word of mouth and she now deals with UGA, Emory and Vanderbilt.  She employs five typists and, although the business wouldn't support her fully, unless she did all the work herself, it provides a nice side income for a part-time job.

There are a lot of people who offer medical transcription but Malinda has  found that just plain transcriptionists are hard to find.  Further, she claims “ I suppose that my prices are reasonable and my work is above par!”  Like most business owners, she’s always looking for new customers so if anyone knows of someone needing transcription services, they can email her at malindamabry@aol.com.
