Cookies, Crafts, Camping---and Leadership for Women

The Girl Scouts of the USA are gearing up for their 100th Birthday Celebration.  Just under one hundred years ago, Juliette Gordon Low adapted Lord Baden-Powell's program for boys into what has become one of the largest leadership development organizations for girls.  Many of us remember selling cookies, doing crafts and going camping, but the Girl Scout program has always been about more than the activity, it has been about teaching girls to set goals, work together and try new things.  It has always been a girl-directed program and many women in leadership positions got their first chance to be something other than the secretary or treasurer when they became a Girl Scout patrol leader or troop officer.

Sunday April 17 (Homecoming Weekend) Interim President Allegra Brigham will host a reception for all former Girl Scouts and Girl Scout leaders honoring Elizabeth Smith Gwin, Class of 1930 who is a Girl Scouts USA 100th Anniversary Honorary Chairperson. In connection with that, we'd like to honor all alumnae who are or have been involved in Girl Scouts. If you were a Girl Scout as a child, have led a troop or served as Cookie Mom, Camping Mom or held some other adult position in Girl Scouting or are currently active in Girl Scouts, please complete the form. If you have any photos of your Girl Scout days that you'd be willing to share, please scan them (if necessary) and email them to mfaeablog@gmail.com.
