One year ago today, the MUW community suffered the tragedy of losing four beautiful bright young women whose W days had barely begun. Catherine Muse, Alondan Turner, Jamelia Brown and Jaslynn McGee headed to Birmingham for a weekend of shopping and fun. Unfortunately, the hotel in which they were staying caught fire and all four perished.
A candlelight vigil was held March 3, 2010, to honor the lives of these young women. One of the guest speakers, Shirley Spain, spoke on behalf of Mississippi's First Alumnae Association. This year, an anniversary memorial was held and Shirley again spoke. She noted that a good crowd attended.
One positive outcome of that tragedy is that Mississippi's First Alumnae Association began a Memorial Scholarship fund, to which people are invited to contribute either in the memory of these precious young women, or in memory of any friend or loved one.
